Used Persian Rugs - Tips
When shopping for used Persian rugs, there are a few things that you should probably be aware of. Some people say to buy new while others say to buy used Persian rugs. Both have a few considerations
1. Most Persian rugs on the market are 'used' rugs. Many good quality Persian or Oriental rugs are older. They are classified at antique, semi-antique, new, and normal. A rug's value does not depreciate over time. It only depreciates because of wear.
2. A brand new Persian rug generally costs the same (sometimes) less than a used Persian rug. The difference is that a new rug might not have the antiqued look or feel yet, but it will. Eventually the bright colors will tone down a bit and the rug will wear slightly giving it a older feel. If you are using the rug in your home, a new one will eventually antique itself.
3. Cheap used Persian rugs are probably useless rugs. They would only be cheap if there is something wrong with them like they are about to fall apart because of wear. As said earlier an Oriental rug or Persian rug generally doesn't become less and less expensive over time unless the rug has had significant wear. If you want to hang a rug on the wall for looks, maybe a worn rug will fit your taste (and budget) better. If you are using the rug on your floors, you need a more durable rug which also implies a more expensive price.
The best thing that you could do is to find a quality Persian rug that would go with your decor and properly take care of the rug. It will naturally age but not be worn out giving you a quality antique rug in the years to come.
