Selecting a Rug Pad - What you need to know

When most people buy a new rug, they don't give a second thought to selecting a rug pad.

Why even buy a rug pad?

Rug pads have many benefits that you might not think of. For example, rug pads keep the rug in place on the floor. If you have ever had an area rug in a high traffic area of your home, you might notice that it will creep along the floor. A rug pad will hold the rug in place. A rug pad will also prevent the rug from wearing out prematurely. If you select a quality rug pad, your quality rug will last much longer.

How do you know which pad is best?

There are a few things to take into account when selecting the pad. The first is thickness. Do you want to add cushion to the rug or it is already thick enough? Some rug pads add up to a half inch of padding while others are basically flat. Size is also another issue. you need to make sure that the rug pad it just about as big as the rug itself. If it is too big, then the rug pad will stick out over the edges looking gaudy. If it is too small, it will not be able to hold the rug in place.

Also take into account if the rug is on a hard surface floor, like a rug pad for hardwood floor, for example. Some rug pads are non-slip allowing the rug to not slip out from underneath you. Many non-slip rug pads are thin enough to allow you to cut them into the shape of your rug for a proper fit.
