Cleaning Persian Rugs - A quality guide on how to keep your rug clean.

Cleaning Persian Rugs - Step by Step

Cleaning Persian rugs or any type of area rug should be of concern because you want to protect your investment. Cleaning Persian rugs if done correctly will preserve the beauty, quality, and durability of your area rugs. There a few different types of cleaning: cleaning stains, cleaning your rug at home, and professional cleaning.

Rug stains can be a huge problem. It is terrible to see rug in the middle of the room which has a small stain on it. Just like carpet time is of the essence. If there is a spill on your rug, take action immediately. Remember to dab and not rub. This will prevent the stain from spreading. In fact before doing anything use a spoon and try to get as much liquid out of the rug. If you have any carpet cleaner that you know works and works with you rug that would be a great idea. If the stain is still there, you might have to consider professional cleaning.

Another type of cleaning Persian rugs is to clean your rug at home. To clean your rug at home you need to prepare the rug first. Vacuum the rug on both sides without sucking up any fringe. Take the rug into an open area (best if outside) and beat the rug. You will practically be tasting dust. Then when hardly any dust is coming out take the rug back inside and vacuum again on both sides. If you have never used soap and water on your rug before, do a color bleed test. This is where you go to a small area of the rug and see if the dye is going to bleed. If it does, you can not clean your rug at home. Go to a professional. If it does not bleed, you can use cold water and soap to wash and clean the rug. This is generally enough. Let the rug dry completely before using again.

If you keep on a schedule as described above, you can't prevent professional cleaning. Every once in awhile (some say 6 months, once a year, once every 3 years) you still have to have professional cleaning. Professional cleaning is about $1-2 per square foot. So your typical 8x10 rug will cost between $80-160. If someone is charging more than $2, find someone else.
