Why To Consider A Thick Rug Pad

Rug padding is one of those topics that people tend to disagree on. Some think that a pad is not too useful at all while others find the benefits of a rug pad to necessary.

The difference between these two groups are foot traffic. If you have a family with children walking across and over the rug all day, the rug will tend to “crawl” across the floor. This is where a thick rug pad can be useful.

Thick pads are generally about 1/4th of an inch thick sometimes slightly thicker. They can actually extend the life of the rug. The reason is that every time a rug is stepped on it can slightly shift. This rug without a pad is gradually wearing away on the underside as it scrapes across the floor. Over years the bottom of the rug will have some damage.

A thick rug pad will cushion this damage and ease the stress on the top of the rug as well. For a small investment it’s a pretty good deal to have your rug last longer.

The other benefit is that most thick rug pads do not move too easily since they are fairly heavy compared to thin pads. This makes it less likely for the rug to move all over the room as people step on it.

The downside to thicker pads is that they are harder to cut and shape to the appropriate size. Not all rugs come in traditional shapes so a thicker pad will have to be cut to be used on those types of rugs.
