What are Handmade Persian Rugs?

And what to look for in a Persian Rug…

Persian area rugs are a subclass of oriental rugs.  Originally they were made by tent-dwelling nomadic tribes and have become a very special, unique style.

Many Persian rugs include folklore or complex patterns that you won’t see on other styles of rugs.

Why handmade versus machine made?

Handmade carpets and rugs are very different from machine made rugs.

A handmade Persian rug will always have knots where the crafter tied off the ends.  It will appear more organic in nature as the artist’s touch will be on each piece.

Machine made rugs are made from computer calculations so they are more uniform in their design with less subtle touches.  Many times they are also made with synthetics to hold the fibers in place since they don’t have knots.

A handmade rug’s fringe is part of the rug as it’s the ends that get tied off while a machine made rug’s fringe is added on optionally.

What to look for in a handmade Persian rug?

Obviously look for the knots to make sure it’s actually handmade.  Also make sure the rug is made from something like wool over polypropylene or other synthetic fibers.
