How Do You Get the Smell Out of a Wool Rug

Wools rugs are nice for rooms and comfy to walk on. They last a very long time, but they have a huge problem. Wool tends to absorb almost all smells that it comes in contact with. Eventually it becomes rather gross smelling in the room dominating the other smells.

Most traditional ways of removing smell like vacuuming just don’t see to work with wool. But there are some solutions to try to get rid of them.

How do you get the smell out of a wool rug?

One of the most natural ways of removing the smells is to put the rug outside on a hot dry day and let it be in the sunlight. Either hang it from a clothesline or put it down on a dry tarp. Make sure that you flip the rug getting both sides.

Another solution is to use cat litter. Sprinkle this over the rug and leave it on all day and night. Don’t walk on the rug at all because you will crush the small particles into the rug which can ruin it. Gently shake off the cat litter in the morning then vacuum the run.

Get some tree tea oil and make a spray. This will be two tablespoons of the tree tea oil to a cup of water. Spray this over the front and back of the rug. It will have a strong smell but can take care of the wool rug smell. Be sure to not completely soak the rug as wool doesn’t do well when wet.

If the wool rug has never been cleaned, that’s another solution to look at. Sometimes these rugs will have to be professionally cleaned to really get rid of all the dirt and smell that is in them.
