Home Rug Cleaning

Even though professional cleaning is great for rugs, there are times where you might want to do your own home rug cleaning. The reason is that doing rug cleaning doesn’t always have to be done by a professional.

The easiest rug cleaning to do is the weekly vacuuming. Vacuum the top and bottom parts of the rug. It’s better to use the nozzle attachment although it is slower. This is much easier on the rug and won’t cause as much damage as some of the high powered vacuum cleaner with spinning brushes will cause to the rug. Also be careful to not get the fringe inside the vacuum cleaner.

Certain types of rugs can be shampoo and steam cleaned. You can buy or rent one of these and occasionally give your rug a deeper cleaning than a vacuum gives. Be careful that you don’t end up using a chemical that will ruin the color of the rug. If you aren’t sure, do a test with a tiny, tiny drop of the chemical onto the rug and wait a few hours to make sure it’s not harming the rug.

Another way to clean a rug is to take it outside and hang it from a line on a sunny and low humidity day. Beat the rug on both sides until the dust and dirt stops coming out of the rug. Be aware that ALOT of dirt and dust can come out so wear a mask if you are allergic to this. Even after you are done, leave the rug out in the sun for a few hours on each side which will help remove odors that are inside the rug. Sun can be bad for rugs but not in small doses.
