Cat Urine Stains and Odor on Rugs

For one reason or another, cats will urinate on your favorite rug which causes a horribly strong odor. Not only is this smelly but it can ruin the colors on the rug over time due to the ammonia in the urine.

If you want to get the cat smell out of the rug, you need to find the source of the smell. While wet, the urine is easy to detect. After it dries the whole room will have that smell making it difficult to track down the source.

One tip is to use a black light or ultraviolet light in the evening to find the hidden stains. There are cheap ones that you can buy to detect pet urine.

Once found use a cat urine product to get the stain and smell out. There are some cat urine products like “Urine Off” that also have pheromones in them to prevent the cat from coming back to urinate in that spot.

If you want to prevent cats from continually urinating on your rugs, you need to try to change their habits. Keep their litter box clean so they will feel more comfortable using it. Make sure all stains are out of the carpet because cats tend to come back to those same spots over and over. If it’s been a long time problem, consider shampooing carpets and professionally cleaning your rugs.
